Learn the band and the venues they play. If you understand how the band moves and what a venues like you can eliminate some variables. By eliminating the unknown you can focus on getting better shots and framing things ‘just right’

The shots attached are what I consider quick and nasty processing on my iPad but they capture the feel I want and they are not too bad. When I look closely at them I can already tell they are substantially better than my initial shots of the band. That was before I got a feel for the band, the venue and the amount of beer required to allow me to move about in a salubrious manner.
